The Miami University Special Education Program prepares and develops Intervention Specialists who are skilled in identifying and supporting learners with all types of developmental differences in the mild to moderate range.

PROGRAM OPTIONS

M.Ed. Program with Initial Licensure
  • For candidates who are seeking an initial teaching credential in Special Education*. 
  • Includes 12-15 courses and a 15-week supervised field experience (54-60 credit hours). 
M.Ed. Program in Special Education
  • For candidates who currently hold a teaching credential (in any discipline) and wish to earn an M.Ed. in Special Education.      
  • Includes approximately 12 courses (30 credit hours).


*The program provides the required courses for eligibility for Ohio licensure in special education. To receive licensure, additional exam(s) are also required.

Key Features of the Program

  • Courses blend online activities with interaction via videoconferencing
  • Courses led by teams of faculty and current special education practitioners
  • Class sessions for each course are scheduled approximately once per month and will be held on weekdays in the evenings.


Mentoring Program

All students in the Bermuda Special Education cohort group will regularly interact with an assigned mentor teacher. The goals of the mentoring program in Special Education are:

  • Provide a structured, safe environment for students to discuss coursework and field-related topics
  • Provide point-of-contact to help students identify and resolve challenges to their successful completion of the Special Education program
  • Share relevant knowledge and professional experience with students to better prepare them to be successful intervention specialists

MASTER OF EDUCATION IN SPECIAL EDUCATION

This sample plan of study is required for students who do not currently hold a teaching license in another discipline (e.g. mathematics, social studies, etc.) and who wish to pursue an initial teaching license in Special Education.

Program Sequence

The course sequence is tentatively schedule to begin the Special Education program beginning in Fall, 2017. Courses are offered once during the program duration, thus adherence to the plan of study is essential as Bermuda-based courses may not be available at a later time.

Orientation Program

All new students will complete an online orientation program during the first two courses of the program. This orientation will provide students opportunities to learn about the program and develop the skills needed to succeed in an academic program comprised largely of online coursework.

* Two courses in Reading/Literacy can be waived for students with approved prior coursework in this subject. Candidates may request an evaluation of prior coursework to determine if a waiver of one or both of these courses can be granted. These courses will be offered at Bermuda College, thus the tuition rate for these 2 courses will be the prevailing tuition rate at Bermuda College at the time of enrolment.

** Student teaching requirement is waived for any student who has previously completed a student teaching placement for a teaching license in another discipline. The requirement is waived only after a review of transcripts is completed upon admission to the program.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:
Courses are 3-credit hours, except Student Teaching (12 hours)
