The Medical Billing & Coding Programme Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify the important role of a medical coder in upholding ethical billing practices and in obtaining reimbursement for healthcare services.
  • Correctly use the ICD-10-CM for diagnostic coding.
  • Correctly use CPT codes for coding medical procedures.
  • Apply national and local HCPCS codes and modifiers.
  • Explain the purpose and use of the ICD-10-PCS codes.

Education & Certification

  • National Healthcareers Association (NHA) Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS) national certification (The NHA exam can be offered both in groups of students in the classroom or individually at a local PSI testing center https://candidate.psiexams.com.)
  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Certified Coding Associate (CCA) (Six months of coding work experience is recommended prior to sitting for the exam.) (This exam is offered through Pearson VUE online. See www.AHIMA.org for details.)
  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification (This exam is offered online or on site through Examity®. See www.aapc.com for more details.)
