Study Skills Workshops

The Reading and Study Skills instructor/tutors help students become more successful in their classes through instruction in study skills and college level reading comprehension skills. One-on-one tutoring is always available. In addition, workshops on specific topics are held during the Fall and Spring semesters.

Organizing time is especially important for students who find the demands of home, work and college overwhelming. Learn how to organize time in order to reduce stress and chaos.

The best way to retain information from class is to write points down which the lecturer teaches. Notes should be taken from lectures to strengthen your understanding of the course material and facilitate study. The ARC tutors will assist students with note-taking techniques that can be used during class lectures.

Your learning style is the way you prefer to learn. There's no such thing as a "good" learning style or a "bad" learning style. The important thing is to be aware of the nature of your learning style. Understanding your individual learning style will enable you to be more successful.

Study methods to prepare for tests and techniques that can be used while taking tests will maximise your performance. Also, you can learn how to overcome test anxiety.

  • Students who have been away from an academic setting for awhile or who “don’t like to read” will benefit from reviewing and extending their reading skills. Individual diagnoses can be made to determine what type of reading help is needed. Strategies are taught to allow students to recognise when they do not fully understand, and how to apply “fix up” techniques. Areas on which students can focus include:
  • Decoding pronunciation
  • Comprehension
  • Summarizing and outlining
  • Vocabulary development
  • Spelling
  • Increasing reading speed

Do you "go blank" when you sit down to take a test or exam? Do you worry excessively about failing? Study methods to change Test Anxiety into Test Confidence. Learn to Create a study schedule, set yourself up for success, and change your mindset.

Computerized Placement Test (CPT)

  1. English (Reading and Writing) and Math are the tests that provide a general idea of the level at which students will be placed in English and Math courses. These are computerized tests. In addition, a written essay that requires the student to write on a given topic within an allotted time will help to identify the student’s writing skills.
  2. There are five tests in the CPT, most of which consist of multiple choice questions.
  3. Reading Comprehension – measures one’s ability to understand what is read.
  4. Sentence Skills – measures one’s understanding of how sentences are constructed, and how to make a sentence complete.
  5. Mathematics – consists of Arithmetic, Elementary Algebra and possibly, college-level Mathematics.

After reviewing the test scores, and high school records (where applicable), advisors will assist in advising which entry level course(s) will be suited to the student’s needs.

As the CPT is computerized, you will be presented with only between 12 – 30 questions in one or more of the five test areas. Each subject area usually takes students on average 15-20 minutes to complete. The tests are not timed, so that students can give each question as much attention as needed.

Questions will appear one at a time on the computer screen, along with easy to understand instructions and other information. As most of the questions are multiple-choice, students are only required to use the space bar to select the desired answer. When a question has been completed and the answer verified, a new screen will appear with the next question or set of instructions.

The CPT uses adaptive testing techniques. This means that the computer automatically determines which questions are presented based on your responses to prior questions.

Students need to focus on the following areas of study when preparing for the Computerized Placement Test:
  • BASIC ARITHMETIC
    • Fractions
    • Decimals
    • Ratio and Proportion
    • Percentages
  • PRE-ALGEBRA
    • Integers
    • Directed Numbers
    • Equations
    • Applications
  • BASIC GEOMETRY
  • INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA REVIEW
  • TEST-TAKING
  • STUDY SKILLS
  • BASIC GRAMMAR, SENTENCE SKILLS
  • READING COMPREHENSION, VOCABULARY

Book an appointment on Calendly for your CPT Test.

Note: Make sure to report to the Testing & Assessment Centre (Hallet Hall) by 8:45 a.m. Students must allow at least three hours for the test.
