Bermuda College Recognised at International Green School Conference in New York

Bermuda College and the Bermuda College Eco Club have received international recognition for their commitment to environmental stewardship, sustainability education and student leadership at the 10th Green School Conference, held on 23 and 24 September, during Climate Week in New York City.

Bermuda College received the Global Green College Award, while Environmental Science Senior Lecturer and Eco Club mentor Amy Harvey received the Global Green Mentor Award, and Bermuda College student and Eco Club President Kathryn Law was recognised with the Greening Graduate Award. The recognition follows Bermuda College's achievement of the Eco-Schools Platinum Award in May.

The College also co-hosted a session at the conference on Wednesday, 23 September, entitled “From Commitment to Platinum: Bermuda College’s Journey Toward a Greener, Climate-Resilient, and Socially Responsible Campus.”

Moderated by Ms. Harvey, the session explored greening schools and climate-resilient campuses, climate leadership and sustainability education, as well as wellness, inclusion and planetary health. Discussion also addressed the role of green campuses and open spaces in supporting the physical and mental well-being of students and staff.

Panellists included Dr. James Shope, Rutgers University Department of Environmental Science; Emilie McGlone, Director of Peace Boat US, a UN educational programme; and Kathryn Law, President of the Bermuda College Eco Club.

The session highlighted practical approaches to climate action and environmental stewardship, including empowering communities, listening to student voices, strengthening people's connection with nature and making the climate movement more accessible and relatable.

Former Bermuda College Eco Club members were also featured in a video showcasing their environmental advocacy and community work. Their stories generated interest among conference attendees in potential collaboration and future opportunities to exchange ideas and initiatives

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Harvey said:

“I feel very privileged to have been able to participate in such an international conference that approached the very crucial topic of climate change and needed action with solution-based ideas and an integrated, ecosystem thought process to create positive movement forward.”

She added that receiving the Global Green College Award, alongside the individual recognition for herself and Ms. Law, represented a significant achievement for the entire College community.

“This is a campus-wide celebration of our hard work as a college community. We look forward to continuing to build on that and improve our connectivity on campus as we all strive for a healthier and happier environment and community.”

Ms. Law described the opportunity to represent Bermuda College on the international stage as an honour.

“I have learned so much from many different perspectives and all walks of life. I find that addressing this huge climate crisis brings peace and hope in the storm that there are opportunities for growth and change. I can’t wait to translate what I have taken in from this conference to Bermuda College and the greater community of Bermuda.”

Bermuda College and its Eco Club remain committed to modelling sustainable practices and encouraging environmental stewardship throughout the College and wider community.
