Bermuda College opens new engineering pathway with Dalhousie University.
Move supports the need to develop Bermudian talent in a field vital to the Island’s future.
Students at Bermuda College can now complete the first year of an electrical engineering pathway at home before transferring directly into year two of a degree at Dalhousie University in Canada.
The new articulation agreement provides a four-year route to the degree, starting with full-time science study at the College and followed by three years at Dalhousie in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
It further expands Bermuda College’s network of 45 articulation agreements with overseas institutions in the UK, US, Canada and Europe, giving local students opportunities to begin their university education on the Island before continuing abroad.
Dr Ali Arouzi, vice-president of academic affairs at Bermuda College, said the latest partnership supported the need to develop more Bermudian talent in the electrical engineering field vital to the Island’s future.
He said: “Bermuda needs more of its own engineers, and this agreement gives our students a clear route to get there.
“They can start their degree at home, with the support of our faculty, and arrive at Dalhousie ready for second year.”
Students entering the pathway will enrol full-time in Science at Bermuda College and complete a set of approved first-year courses.
To transfer, they must achieve a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and a grade of at least 2.0 in each transferable course. Those meeting the requirements will progress directly into Year 2 at Dalhousie.
The Canadian university provides engineering students with access to laboratories and research facilities, while design projects and student teams form part of their experience from the first semester.
Its programme also includes paid co-op work terms with more than 90 industry partners, with Dalhousie reporting a 97 per cent placement rate.
The Faculty of Engineering offers seven disciplines, and the university provides millions of dollars in scholarships and awards each year.
Dr Darrel A Doman, professor and associate dean at Dalhousie University, said: “As Dalhousie Engineering continues to grow its student population, we are very excited to start a new partnership with Bermuda College in Electrical Engineering.
“While a long-time partner with Dalhousie, this is the first opportunity for Engineering to engage with an innovative institution such as Bermuda College.”
The agreement builds on the longstanding relationship between the two institutions while creating a new opportunity in engineering and broadening the range of degree routes available through Bermuda College.
It follows the College's agreement with the University of Memphis’ Herff College of Engineering, which created a structured pathway for students to move from an Associate of Science degree into undergraduate engineering programmes.
Under the agreement, eligible Bermuda College graduates can transfer credits into Bachelor of Science programmes in biomedical, civil, electrical, computer and mechanical engineering, as well as engineering technology at Herff College of Engineering.
