BC Actuarial Science student impresses at ILS Bermuda Convergence Conference

Bermuda College Actuarial Science student, NISHA S. SMITH, was recently awarded a $500 cheque from ILS Bermuda, for her winning essay on, “How Should CEOs of the Insurance/Reinsurance/ILS industry Respond to the Market and Climate Changes They Face”. Ms. Smith described climate change as a “huge topic”, and an extremely interesting one. The 22-year old emphasised how climate change affects the insurance linked securities (ILS) marketplace, and in particular, the important role that advisors play.

“In my essay, I told CEOs that it was important that the risks you are selecting to price, should not be just any risk, but risks that are not in environments considered high risk; basically, you need to ensure that the risks undertaken are calculable. I also wrote that it’s just as important to educate developers and contractors, based on your topographical information, as it is your clients, so that they can make smarter moves, and more informed decisions.” Her research for the essay impressed Michael Coles, Head of Education & Scholarships for ILS Bermuda, who singled out Nisha’s grasp of the subject and her engagement at the Conference. “(She) took notes and ‘showed up’, and She is bright, capable, and competent. And I hope there are opportunities that are going to be presented to her because of it.”

Ms. Smith was one of 12 Bermuda College students, and two professors who were given complimentary tickets to attend the prestigious event, said to be the largest global gathering covering the alternative risk and insurance-linked securities (ILS) market, and attracting business students from around the world. The annual conference was held in October.
Bermuda ILS Convergence sets itself apart from most traditional conferences, bringing together key players in the alternative reinsurance, convergence and insurance linked securities marketplace for networking and education sessions.
