Twenty-four graduands will be celebrated in a virtual Winter Commencement ceremony on Thursday, January 20. It is the second time in as many years that the College has held a Winter Commencement.
Bermuda College President, Dr. Duranda Greene noted the exceptional calibre of the graduates with fifty percent (50%) of the graduates achieving either merit (GPA 3.0 – 3.49), or distinction (GPA 3.5 – 4.0) honours. “This underpins the resilience distinctive of most Covid-era graduates,” she stated. “Their perseverance may not be as much in spite of the Covid challenges, but because of (the Covid challenges). They’ve pushed harder, determined to succeed.”
Vice President of Academic & Student Affairs, Dr. Phyllis Curtis-Tweed noted, “I am elated to celebrate this achievement with our students. Bonhoeffer once said, “There is meaning in every journey that is unknown to the traveller.” I wish them all the best and hope that the graduation of this small group at the half-year mark inspires others to succeed.”
Registrar and Co-chair of the Commencement Committee, Carleen Place noted the students’ tenacity. “Our students have persevered through the changes within the academic landscape caused by the pandemic. We have seen an increase in the number of students completing their programme during the Fall semester as internships and practicums were delayed. They are all deserving of our congratulations.”
The largest graduate group comes out of the Division of Nursing & Allied Health with 7 graduands earning their Associate of Science (Nursing) degrees. A traditional Pinning Ceremony was held in their honour Monday evening.
Guest speaker for Thursday’s Commencement is Miss Dejaneé Hill-Edwards, B.Sc., M.Sc., Underwriting Assistant at Arch Re, and one of the first dual enrolment graduates at Bermuda College (Class of 2016).
Student speaker, Miss Kristina Burrows, will be graduating with an Associates of Arts (Business Administration) degree. Student speaker, Miss Kristina Burrows, will be graduating with an Associates of Arts (Business Administration) degree.
