PROGRAMME CONTENT & MODULE DESCRIPTIONS


The LLB Stage I Programme consists of the following modules:
1. LW313 Critical Introduction to Law (30 credits)
2. LW315 Introduction to Obligations (15 credits)
4. LW316 Foundations of Property (15 credits)
3. LW508 Criminal Law (30 credits)
4. LW588 Public Law 1 (30 credits)

The length of the 30-credit module is between 22 and 25 weeks, including 2 reading weeks and 2 writing weeks, the 15-credit modules are held in either the Fall or Spring semester. Each module has two one-hour lectures and one two-hour seminar per week, excluding reading and writing weeks.

The LLB Stage I Programme consists of the following five modules:

LW 313 A Critical Introduction to Law 30 credits
The central purpose of this module is to explain the relationship between law and society. The module attempts to question common sense perspectives, arguing that they are themselves ideological and that they require sophisticated legitimization.

LW 315 Introduction to Obligations 15 credits
Offered in the Fall semester only, this module will introduce students to the basic concepts of contract law and tort, and focus on a special area of study in each. The module is also designed to foster confidence and competence in the study and application of case law.

LW 316 Foundations of Property 15 credits
Offered in the Spring semester only, this module will build on Introduction to Obligations by further developing an understanding of private law and its subdivisions, identifying property issues, using the tools and language employed in property law and critically examining related issues and cases.

LW 508 Criminal Law 30 credits
This module provides coverage of the general principles of English Criminal Law, as well as examines a number of specific offences in detail. It concentrates on the general principles of Criminal Law, illustrating them by reference to specific areas such as murder, defenses to murder, manslaughter, theft, deception and general defenses.

LW 588 Public Law 1 30 credits
This module has four main parts – the English Legal System, Constitutional Law, Administrative Law, and Civil Liberties and Individual Rights. It will be assessed by 40% coursework and 60% written exam.

Did You Know?

Upon successful completion of the Kent Law Programme, you will be admitted to Stage 2 at Kent Law School.

Alternatively,  you can elect to receive a Certificate in Law, which can be used to apply to other UK universities in order to transfer or complete the degree by distance.
